West called it his 'left hand,' relying on its internal pitch-shift function to speed up soul samples without losing sample memory — the technical basis of his early 'chipmunk soul' style.
West stated in a 2004 interview: 'The ASR-10 is like my left hand. I can chop samples into 61 pieces without wasting any memory... I just put the pitch up on the sampler, and it will go faster.' Producer Just Blaze documented keeping the exact unit West used at Baseline Studios.
